Dead strings

I realized today that when I play strumming songs, that I occasionally have damped/dead strings. When I'm fingerpicking, these are easy to spot and fix, but it's harder when strumming.

Buzzing strings are easy to catch with either technique.

I'm always worrying about the "quality" of my strumming, and I'm thinking now that unnoticed damped strings may be part of the problem.

how often do you change them?

after my scary experience w/ that this past weekend, I'm feeling very glad that I've switched to an instrument that's easier to maintain! heh... I managed to break one of the knobby things on mine. ugh.

I usually change them every few months, but this last batch has been on a while.

What "scary experience"???

Let's just say my fingers are ok w/ playing guitars & such, but they're not very good at tying knots. I also lack the proper genes and/or hormones to be able to replicate such knots no matter how many help sites & YouTube videos I use.

So, I decided to change all my strings at once & also clean up the guitar over the weekend. The cleaning part went very well - I should've done that a long time ago! But the changing strings part... ugh. It just seemed to take forever. And then when it was done & I was tuning the thing up, I went & broke the knob thing on the low E. I think it was because the gears were smushed just enough to cause too much tension. Or, I somehow strung that string horribly wrong. I hope it's not the latter!

The only reason I did this now was so I could practice a bit before playing w/ my Dad while in TX. But, I had also sprained my left thumb earlier. So... I haven't practiced any instrument in over a week (having the flu helped w/ that also). Oh well! At least I can still sing w/ Dad!
